Everybody Loves the Sunshine

Happy 70th birthday, Roy Ayers!

I did not know of this song or artist until ten minutes ago, when the able DJ at KALX played it for my listening pleasure. I have to say it’s pretty awesome. I’m going to seek out some of Roy’s records next time I’m in Berkeley.

KALX, the radio station that broadcasts out of a dingy basement at UC Berkeley, may be the best example from real life of a successfully provided public good. It has made me aware of more cool songs and artists than I can even remember. Without it, my life would have been a poorer one. When I contemplate that the crappy commercial stations are somehow making money, and that KALX and NPR are running at a loss, it strikes me as a compelling illustration that profitability is not always a good measure of actual value.
